The key question is whether you need to receive email later. A one-off test may suit disposable email; a lasting account needs an address you retain.
Three questions before registering
- Will I need to sign in or recover a password later?
- Could receipts, decisions or security alerts arrive later?
- Does the website allow disposable addresses for this purpose?
Use a permanent address when future access matters, and follow the website’s terms.
Example: testing a registration flow
For an app you develop, create a test address, trigger a confirmation and check the sender, subject and code. Use test information and a test environment where possible. Save your result in a test report rather than treating the temporary inbox as an archive.
Example: receiving one download link
A temporary address may work if a website accepts it and you only need a link once. If the download is attached to a license, account or updates you want later, choose a permanent address or lasting alias. A temporary address does not change consent given in the form.
Use a permanent address for important accounts
Banking, public services, purchases, travel bookings, receipts and subscriptions need continuing access. Social accounts and work tools need password recovery and security notifications. Temporary email is not suitable for confidential information.
What it protects
Disposable email keeps your usual email address out of that registration form. It does not make your online activity anonymous. Both websites and the email provider can process technical information. Abandoning an address does not delete an account or data held by another website.
When a website blocks the address
A new address on the same domain does not fix a domain block. Use a permanent address or contact the website. Do not bypass access controls, trial limits or other terms.
An alias may suit ongoing contact
